The Impact of Gps Velocity Based Flight Control on Flight Instrumentation Architecture

This thesis explores the use of velocity information obtained by a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver to close the aircraft’s flight control loop. A novel framework to synthesize attitude information from GPS velocity vector measurements is discussed. The framework combines the benefits of high-quality GPS velocity measurements with a novel velocity vector based flight control paradigm to...

Flight Tests of a 3-D Perspective-View Glass-Cockpit Display for General Aviation Using GPS

A display that takes advantage of the threedimensional positioning data available from differential GPS has been flight tested on a general aviation aircraft. This glass-cockpit instrument provides a natural, “out the window” view of the world, making the horizon, runway, and desired flight path visible to the pilot in instrument flight conditions. The flight path is depicted as a series of sym...

Spatial Audio Displays for Improving Safety and Enhancing Situation Awareness in General Aviation Environments

Most current displays in general aviation (GA) environments employ, at best, relatively simple audio displays that do not fully exploit the operator’s sensory processing capabilities, and thus may not allow pilots to take full advantage of the available information. This paper describes a series of four experiments conducted in an actual flight environment at the USAF Test Pilot school that eva...

Maximizing Aviation Benefits from Satellite Navigation

This report describes the key elements and results of Stanford University’s contribution to the development of the Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS), its underlying technologies, and alternative methods to provide global vertical guidance to aircraft. WAAS became the first operational space based augmentation system (SBAS) in July 2003. WAAS augments the Global Positioning System (GPS) with ...

Correlation of GPS signal fades due to ionospheric scintillation for aviation applications

Deep and frequent Global Positioning System (GPS) signal fading due to strong ionospheric scintillation is a major concern for GPSguided aviation in equatorial areas during high solar activity. A GPS aviation receiver may lose carrier tracking lock under deep fading, and a lost channel cannot be used for position calculation until lock is reestablished. Hence, frequent loss of lock due to frequ...
